Copa de Europa Today is the 12th anniversary of the ninth European Cup win

Zidane's incredible volley and some world-class saves from Casillas at the end of the game are some of the greatest moments in the history of Real Madrid.
On the 15th of May 2002, Glasgow's Hampden Park hosted the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen. The Whites finished their one hundredth season off in style and the final whistle brought tears to the eyes of Casillas and euphoria from Zidane and Figo. Twelve years ago, room was made in the club's trophy cabinet for their ninth European Cup, adding to Real Madrid's reputation as the 'King of Europe'.

The first goals in the match came early and by the time the clock read 15 it was already 1-1. Raúl put the Spanish side ahead with delightful finish after latching on to a long Roberto Carlos throw-in. However, the Whites' celebrations were short-lived, as Lucio levelled in the 14th minute by heading home a corner.

Just when it looked like the match was destined to go to half-time all square, Madrid produced one of the greatest goals in the history of football. In the 44th minute, Solari's long ball found Roberto Carlos on the left wing and the Brazilian looped a high cross to the edge of the box. There, it was met by a Zidane whose sweet left-foot volley rocketed into the top corner of Butt's goal.
ZIDANE AND FIGO JOINED THE WHITES IN ORDER TO WIN THIS PRESTIGIOUS TITLE.
During the second half, César had to leave the pitch with an injury. He was replaced by Casillas, whose performance was as important as that well-remembered Zidane goal in helping the club towards lifting its ninth European Cup title. During the last seven minutes of the game Bayer kept Madrid trapped in their own box and it was then that Casillas pulled off a moment of magic. The goalkeeper made three saves in the space of a minute to ensure that it would be the Whites who celebrated.
